"A suspect was arrested Wednesday "for the December 26, 1996, murder of JonBenet Ramsey," the district attorney in Boulder, Colorado, said Wednesday.
A law enforcement source identified the suspect as 41-year-old John Mark Karr, a one-time schoolteacher and American citizen who has lived in Conyers, Georgia.
Karr has confessed to some elements of the crime, law enforcement sources told CNN.
The sources added that Karr had been communicating with someone in Boulder and that online investigation played a key role in leading authorities to the suspect.
It is the first arrest in the decade-long investigation of the 6-year-old beauty pageant contestant's slaying. The breakthrough came as a surprise to many who feared the case might never be solved.
Karr was arrested in Bangkok, Thailand, following "several months of focused and complex investigation," District Attorney Mary Lacy said.
JonBenet's parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, were consulted during the investigation, Lacy said, and the Ramsey family was notified of the arrest. Patsy Ramsey died in June of ovarian cancer at age 49.
Two law enforcement sources told CNN that Karr also is under investigation for an unrelated sex crime.
"I do want to say, however, that the investigation of the individual arrested today in connection with JonBenet's death was discussed with Patsy and me by the Boulder district attorney's office prior to Patsy's death in June. So Patsy was aware that authorities were close to making an arrest in the case and had she lived to see this day, would no doubt have been as pleased as I am with today's development almost 10 years after our daughter's murder. Words cannot adequately express my gratitude for the efforts of Boulder District Attorney Mary Lacy and the members of her investigative team."

i've read a few of [former fbi agent] john douglas' books on serial killers and killers in general and he got it totally right. the parents were innocent.
It's about time that they made an arrest. It took them long enough, about 10 years.
isn't it a little ironic that they made no arrest for 10 years, then the mother dies and all of a sudden they have a suspect....maybe she made a death bed confession???
re Peace Pipe above. I live here in CO and all along when everyone was all "the family did it" I agreed until John Douglas said they didn't. His reputation should speak for itself.
So they lived with the accusations for many years....
I never really thought it was the parents. I mean, just because of her high profile that brings in the option of stalkers and jealous parents, etc.
The way she was killed wreaked not of parental abuse but of a sexual predator. JonBenet died after a garrote was fashioned to her neck. That is an effed up version of a sexual fantasy to these sex offender monsters, not something a parent does. The guy's name is supposedly John Karr. He was originally from GA, which is where the Ramsey's were from before moving to Boulder and where they moved back to after JonBenet's death. Meaning this guy could have stalked her for awhile.
Wow! If it's true, I owe an apology to Patsy's soul. I've always thought she had a hand in it.
So what? How many other murders in the us involving children go unsolved? I remember this case and remember thinking what about other children? We were/are played into the media hands. However, I love the juicy gossip too.
Oh so now he is saying that the justice system has to move in an orderly fashion...10 years ago he wouldn't even talk to the police to eliminate himself (which is normal procedure). That is where all the accusations that he and his wife were guilty came from.
(10:38PM) Why would criticize John Ramsey? He lost his daughter and now his wife to cancer. This may be the only good day he has had in years. How nice of someone like you to come along and shit on it with judgemental words.

(10:38 pm) I wouldn't talk to the police either. A big deal was made out of the fact that both parents had sep. lawyers. Any lawyer would tell you to get your OWN lawyer instead of sharing one. The police can take any thing you say and use it against you. They are in the business of finding a guilty party, a lawyer is in the business of protecting you. If you were Ghandi you should still have a lawyer before you talked to the police in a murder case.
Jeez, I can't believe people are buying this. Yes, definitely interesting that Patsy dies and this happens. Three things I took from articles I read.. 1) The man's ex-wife, who is not a freak and left him and never once spoke to him after he was arrested in 2001 for child pornography and no doubt thinks he is a pig, said they lived in Alabama at the time of the murder and that he was definitely there with her and their 3 sons during the Christmas season. 2) It has also been reported that his specifics of his having accidentally killing her during sex, etc, do not match up with the condition of the body when she was found. 3) Lastly, someone who knows the guy said that he has been infamous locally for the 2001 child pornography thing but that now he will be famous nationally. ..This guy is a freak who confessed for the attention. Either he felt it was a good time to do this now that the person he believes really killed the kid is gone (Patsy) ...or maybe John Ramsey or someone in that circle has a part in this, believing everyone will feel so guilty for blaming Patsy for the last 10 years and now she's dead, that ...whatever...I don't know, but I don't think he killed her. There have historically been a lot of freaks who either killed or confessed falsely to killings to get attention. As for the parents, if someone kills your kid, you cooperate no matter what it means to your life. That's normal. What they did was not the normal reaction of grieving parents.
I believe Patsy Ramsey is rotting in hell and will never know peace. Little JB is in a beautiful place and out of her reach. No justice on earth, but justice in the hereafter.

People who still think Patsy did it have not been following the real case...just reading the tabloids. Her handwriting did not match the note. There was no snow on the sidewalk [look at the photos] which is why there were no footprints.
Previous poster said it: parents don't use garrottes. It's never happened in the annals of criminal history.
It infuriates me that people are so-ill informed and have inflicted more evil on Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey and their friends and family than any human beings ever deserved after after a 6-year old baby was hideously murdered on Christmas Day. THEY DID NOT DO IT. THEY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. Please stop slandering the dead woman, and let her rest in peace.

I too think Patsy (and or, now John) had some part to play in this murder. Like the previous poster Syd, I always thought Patsy had something to do with it, and when this story broke I asked to be forgiven for wrongfully accusing PR. However, I now think perhaps the 2/3 of them could have been involved

The whole Ramsey family is freakish. They ran a pr campaign for years with their bullshit polygraph tests (given by people chosen by them). Next time I kill some one I am going to sit and write a 4 page ransom note, seems like that throws em off the track for good. f*** the Ramsey family. The last surviving parent and the brother need to come clean.
