JOHN TRAVOLTA DOES HAIRSPRAY.

John Travolta is set to star in a movie role that was previously played by a transvestite. He has been cast as Edna Turnblad in a musical remake of John Waters 1988 flick Hairspray. In Waters' original, the character was played by the dearly departed transvestite performer Divine. Queen Latifa has also been cast in the film as Motormouth Maybelle. The original movie (which was not a musical) was later turned into one on Broadway and starred Harvey Firestein in the Edna role. There is a nationwide search going on to find someone to play the main role of Tracy Turnblad. Call me crazy, but I'd still like to see Ricki Lake who originated the role playing the part. At first I thought it was a bit soon to do a remake of such a great movie, but since this version of Hairspray will be a musical, I think it's going to be a lot of fun. I can't wait to see John Travolta doing a musical again (oh how I loved Grease!) and Queen Latifa will be awesome in anything she does. The movie is slated for a summer 2007 release. If you haven't seen the original, I highly recommend going out and renting it. Aside from seeing a really fat Ricki Lake, Debbie Harry and Sonny Bono are also in it. It's kinda kooky, kinda crazy and a lot of fun.

The original movie came out in 1988, not 1998.
